De PMW-EX3 is de opvolger van de succesvolle PMW-EX1 en heeft alle functies van zijn voorganger en voegt daar een nieuw semi-schouderontwerp aan toe. Daarnaast biedt deze camcorder ook nog een verwisselbaar lens-systeem, genlock, timecode en afstands-besturing waardoor het extra flexibel is en een goede optie is voor een HD-studio met een krap budget.
De PMW-EX3 combineert het state-of-the-art, non-lineare XDCAM systeem met de hoogste HD kwaliteit die er tot noch toe in een semi-schoudermodelcamera op de markt is gekomen. Het is dan ook de eerste camcorder die het legendarische CineAlta 24P-logo voert met meerdere frame-rate opnamemogelijkheden zoals 59.94i, 50i en native 23.98P - buiten dat hij ook volledig 1080i/720P schakelbaar is.
Daarnaast is er ook nog de keuze om in 35Mbps High Quality te filmen of de 25Mbps HDV-1080i compatibiliteitsmodus te gebruiken. Om gebruik te kunnen maken van deze opnamekwaliteiten gebruikt de PMW-EX3 hetzelfde beeld-systeem als de PMW-EX1, drie ½" CMOS sensors van elk 1920x1080 pixels. Ook wordt er een, speciaal voor deze camera ontworpen, Fujinon Professional HD ½-inch 14x lens meegeleverd en een uniek dual-focus ring-mechanisme. Meegeleverd wordt een ½" lens-adapter zodat andere ½" lenzen gebruikt kunnen worden (en er zijn ook adapters leverbaar voor 2/3", Cinema-style en digitale SLR-lenzen).
Om de opname-duur te vergroten heeft de PMW-EX3 twee geheugenkaart-slots wat inhoudt dat je met twee 16 GB SxS PRO geheugenkaarten tot wel 140 minuten in HD kunt blijven filmen.
